In return, we actively participate in local school and sporting events. Our caring attitude extends well beyond Australian shores as 1300SMILES supports YWAM (Youth with a Mission) Medical Ships Australia.
What Is YWAM And How Does 1300SMILES Participate?
YWAM is a charity that is active in more than one hundred and eighty countries. Each centre is autonomous and is able to adapt to meet the specific needs of that community. In Townsville, YWAM has been operating for more than twenty years and concentrates on training, youth initiatives and providing medical services.
We are a major supporter of this charity by providing supplies and equipment for use on the medical ships, and our staff volunteer to support this worthy cause. In addition to volunteering his dental skills, our founder Dr. Daryl Holmes is an advisor to the charity.
This charity uses specially equipped ships with on-board dental surgeries and operating theatres to help address some of the health challenges faced in Papua New Guinea. These include maternal and infant mortality rates, malaria and HIV infection. We are so lucky to live in a country with easy access to great medical and dental care, and it is lovely to help others who do not have this privilege.
