Halitosis, oral malodour or bad breath is a common complaint in adults, although few mention it.

Halitosis is most commonly caused by:

  • Poor oral hygiene,
  • Ill-fitting dentures,
  • Smoking and alcohol,
  • Dry mouth,
  • Oral infections,
  • Food items such as garlic and onion or
  • Psychological.

The Least common causes of halitosis are:

  • Ear, nose and throat infection,
  • Kidney or liver disease,
  • Metabolic disorders or
  • Medications.

The cause of halitosis is gram negative bacteria normally present on the back of the tongue which release chemicals rich in sulphur. The assessment of oral malodour is usually subjective by simply smelling exhaled air coming from the mouth and nose.

The treatment of halitosis will depend on the cause however it can usually be managed through:

  • Good oral hygiene,
  • Regular dental visits,
  • Identifying the cause,
  • Tongue cleaning and/or
  • Mouthwash

If the cause of Halitosis is extra oral then it may be necessary for your dentist to refer you to a specialist.
