At 1300SMILES, your suitability will be assessed for a number of different orthodontic treatments when you come in for your appointment. Dr Julia team will answer any questions you have and outline all your treatment options, which might include:
Children’s mouths, jaws and teeth continue to develop as they mature. As such, their suitability for specific treatments may differ from what is available for adults.
Children’s first orthodontic evaluations can be as soon as age six or seven. Early Orthodontic Treatment is sometimes recommended between the ages of seven and eleven as it allows the growth of children’s jawbones to be guided while they are still developing.
Orthodontics Australia recommends that all children between the ages of 8 and 10 visit a registered specialist orthodontist for assessment. They also state you should consider a consultation if your child exhibits any of these behaviours:2
Whilst adults may be past their growth phase, there are plenty of adult orthodontic options to help you get your dream smile. Clear aligners like Invisalign are often popular choices for adults, allowing you to straighten your teeth with virtually invisible and removable aligners.

Meet Dr Julia Dando, your expert orthodontic specialist at 1300SMILES Dentists North Shore in Townsville. With extensive experience and qualifications, Dr Julia provides top-notch orthodontic care, including Invisalign and braces, to patients of all ages in Townsville.
Dr Julia is originally from the UK and studied dentistry in Cardiff. She initially worked as a General Dentist in Private Practice in Swansea and later as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within several hospitals in Wales. These jobs gave her wide-ranging dental experience before her postgraduate specialist training in Orthodontics through the University of Sheffield and the Royal College of Surgeons in England.
After moving to Sydney in 2000, Dr Julia started work as an Orthodontist at Westmead Hospital; in this role, she gained a lot of experience working with children and young adults with more complex needs due to medical or behavioural considerations. After a few years, Dr Julia transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where she became the lead Orthodontist on the cleft lip and palate and craniofacial team.
In addition to her hospital roles, Dr Julia has worked part-time in a private orthodontic practice in Western Sydney since 2005, where she was involved in adopting and applying new digital technologies in orthodontics.
Dr Julia has been an active member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, serving as State Secretary in NSW for several years and is a full member of the Australian Dental Association, Australasian Cleft Lip and Palate Association and World Federation of Orthodontists.
After visiting regularly since 2018, Dr Julia decided to make the move permanently and is now enjoying the North Queensland lifestyle as a Townsville Orthodontic Specialist at 1300SMILES Dentists North Shore.
She has recently started sailing as part of a regular crew and likes to explore the area in her 4WD and camping. She has a cute mini labradoodle called Bommie, and he loves to walk along the Strand with her every day. She loves watching the Cowboys and supports them wholeheartedly (unless they are playing South Sydney Rabbitohs)!
Dr Julia loves her job and takes great pleasure in watching confidence grow in all her patients as they progress through their treatment. This Townsville orthodontist looks forward to meeting you soon!
